im wanting to install vista SP2 (i just reformatted), but im wondering if there is a performance loss or gain with SP2. I don't need all the extra features of SP2 (Blu Ray burning, Search 4.0 etc). All i want is max performance.

I think generally performance should increase.

And what you shouldn't forget, all the security patches.

Agreed, but the performance increase is hardly noticeable. The real benefit as you said is from the security and stability SP2 brings as well as bug fixes.

I noticed an overall performance improvement after installing SP2 (except for system startup, which seemed to become a little slower).

But... as Gary pointed out, the bigger benefit is the improved security that comes with staying up-to-date.

I've seen no change in the performance of my computers after installing SP2. Like others have said, I did it primarily to make sure I had the latest stability and security updates.

Yes, I've noticed the same. I would update to SP2.

Start-up time improved, however, the boot-up time slowed down. So, is about the same.
Bugs fixed and run IE and FF faster. As well as much more stable.

You won't regret SP2. It does not cause any slow-downs with it's new features and patches.

Huh? How are you defining start-up versus boot-up? And have you defragged the boot files yet? (See my signature line for details.)

i guess one is till logon, one is logon to desktop? but not sure which is which for him :)

other than that, yes, install sp2. get off the paranoya of "omg i lose some performance" and patch your system, that's so much more important. other than that, search 4.0 IS for performance, f.e.

My Start-up mean when it loads to desktop, it takes time to load all the start-up programs.
My Boot-up mean when it loads to desktop without load all the start-up items.
Sort of things. But generally, it is about the same.
I am using Windows 7 now. It have auto-boot defrag function while the system idle for a long period.

I suppose you should speak about boot to log in screen and logging in - makes it clearer :)

And the automatic defragmentation - Vista has it too-
