Before anyone says anything, I have searched and I have yet to see a solution...

Why did MS lower the volume in win vista/7 and how can I revert it back to XP levels?

    :(

It could be due to several things.

Check the Bass Boost customization. To do that, click the volume control and click the speaker icon at the top of it. From the dialog box that opens, click on the speakers and choose Properties. Click Enhancements and uncheck all boxes. Click Apply, then try playing something to see if the volume changes.

Try uninstalling your custom sound driver (if your laptop uses one) and try the standard Microsoft one.

MS didn't do anything with Vista/ Win 7's audio volume. It could be the fault of your OEM audio driver.
