    couple questions:

    1.) ive heard of starbucks and other places offering wi-fi services. I was wondering if this was free, and what i would have to d to obtain this sirvice.

    2.) is there any freeware program out there that would indicate wi-fi signal

    Most places charge either a hourly rate or a monthly fee. However, I have found a couple of mom n pop coffee house, which offer free wireless.

    I assume you have a wireless card . . . And as such, you should be capable of viewing available networks, which are in range.

    There are handheld wi-fi finders. However, I've heard that they have some issues.

    a good friend of mine spends so much time at starbucks that he cancelled his cable service at home and bought a pass for starbucks. the one he bought allows him to access at starbucks across southern california (san diego to ventura) for $30/month

    The wardrivers use Net Stumbler. You can get it at http://netstumbler.com/ It is on compatable with a few cards.
