i personally have both of them installed on my computer and they both work perfectly fine
note that the avast has the oool factor and AVG is down to the basics type of control panel
    they both work harmoniously together
and would recommend installing them both and removing one if needed and the once you dislike and sticking to the one which you feel is effctive and more user friendly as people usually differ in their opinions and persoal experiece with each
nothing like trying both of them first hand

used avg for 3 years problem free. My firewall (zonealarm free) slows down my laptop more.

I have also used AVG Free for many years as well, I hear AVAST is also great.

I also use Spybot Search and Destroy with Adaware for cleaning spyware and malware.

Each of the antivirus packages has it's advantages.
    http://wiki.castlecops.com/AntiVirus_Comparison
contrasts Avira Antivir, AVG and Avast free versions. The list is from 2006, but gives you an idea which larger features are present in each - silent mode scanning, email scanning, and so on.

Because it seems relatively light on resources, I use Avira AntiVir no my A8jm.
I used AVG for a long time. I found it effective, but it slowed down my system a bit more than some others.
    I haven't tried Avast in a while.

I use AVG and unlike polycount, I actually find it to be quite lightweight. Compared to avast, I'd pick AVG. Sure you don't get some fancy UI, but in fact I think the AVG control panel is more usable, even though it's not terribly pretty.

According to that Wiki article, it would seem AVG sort of sucks in picking up virii though....

I've been using AVAST for about a year now. Have had no problems with it.

If you need a freeware firewall, check out Comodo.

I think Avast has better cleaning features, but it seems to take more resources. Avast also has the downside of having to register in order to activate.

Below is a link to a comparison of anti virus programs. I'm not sure who the author is. It seems that Avira is really good, then Avast, and lastly AVG. I've used AVG for years now and like it's minimal interface, though it's annoying when you want to see what it actually detected some times. Anyone here used Avira? I hear it's got an annoying add every time you update?

I used both before and went with Avast. I finally gave in and upgraded to the Pro version, I think the people deserve to get paid for their hard work. What I like most is the program alarms verbally with sounds when there's a potential infected file. Zone Alarm sucks specially when you're uninstalling the program, gotta go thru hoops just to do it. Norton and Symantec are good but sometimes you have to buy individual features.

I have tried both. If this matters -- Avast will detect a key logger on my laptop whereas AVG won't.

I've been using AVG for a few years now without problems. I tried Avast once but it seemed to be more resource heavy, so I dumped it and reinstalled AVG.

i have Avast Pro that hasnt given me any problems and is a great antivirus.

i use Zonealarm Pro for my firewall which is also outstanding.

Use Adaware and SpyBot to do my cleanup job.

And not to mention Tuneup Utilites 2007 for my XP Management. Great piece of software.

Tried Avast and it's more heavier on load. I'm using AVG now. no problems so far. it traps naughty scripts and objects as i browse throgh ah... a... heavenly websites. haha. :D I used to have Norton with the most and almost perfect scanning engine but it eats up most of my resources. so i throw it out.

The other day I ran a full scan with AVG, and then went to the Symantec site to run the online Norton AV scancheck thing. It found nothing, so my AVG must be working as well as Norton right now. ;)

I uninstalled AVG today. I'm running AntiVir now for a test. It's true. it's faster and has lesser resource footprint. Read some reviews at download.com also. I hope the table provided is accurate. I'm quite impressed too though. well see in the upcoming days. :)

I actually just started using AVG (the free version didn't support Vista-64 until very recently), and really like it.

I used Symantec Corporate AV 10.2 before, as it was free for all students at my school. Although it was MUCH better on system resources than the consumer versions of Symantec's products, it just never impressed me. AVG doesn't seem to produce false positives the way Symantec occaisonally did, and the interface is definitely better, while still being lite on resources.

I chose AVG. I tried Avast a few years ago but it proved to be a slow resource hog with a badly laid out control panel in comparison. I also have Spyware terminator installed and use the Jetico firewall.

Both are very good antivirus package.
AVG is lighter and faster but lacks x64 support for the free version. Due to that i am now using avast! antivirus on Vista x64, but sometimes the voice status (the *bling* "virus database has been updated") annoys me. i disabled it instead.

One thing I hate about Antivir is that the real-time shield uses network sockets for interprocess communication. Thus if you use something like ZoneAlarm which shows a real-time indication of network activity, you will see activity all the time, even when you are not talking to an external network. This alone was reason enough for me to dump Antivir. I switched to Avast a few years ago and have had no problems.

Finally I'm back with Norton. Norton 2007. Still can't replace the product.
