Which ever one comes with it. Or the best price. No reason to go out and by either one or make that the deciding factor when shopping. Hardware and price more important!

I would take Vista. Going forward, it will have better support.

You wouldn't want to look like one of those losers that still used Windows 98 when XP came out! (I was one of them :( )

XP Home is so similar to XP Professional that you needn't worry about the fact that you'd only be getting Home. They only things you lose are some Workgroup connectivity features and Pro has a little better security out of the box with a required Administrator password, but that can be configured on Home as well.

Vista Basic is a really trimmed down version of Vista, and doesn't even feature the nice GUI that MS likes to push so much. Of course, you can always upgrade it later for a price. I'd personally go with XP, but if you plan on keeping the computer for several years and don't want to pay the several hundred dollars to upgrade to Vista, I'd suggest you go with Vista basic and spend a little more to upgrade to Vista Premium via the Upgrade Anytime program.

Actually you can. Just call the Dell's customer service. There wasn't any problem changing to Vista home premium when I called them and made my order. I was also able to get a better price by phone. :)

pretty sure it will cost atleast an extra 30 bucks, but I think it would be closer to 50.
