Alright, I just ran a system checker to provide information for the starcraft 2 beta opt-in.

Incidentally, when the check finished, it claimed I had 137.651 GB free out of 155.045 GB.

However, in windows explorer, my drive is claimed to only have 85.5 GB free! What on earth could be wasting 50GB of storage? How can I find out?

Page file, system restore, hibernate are most likely the culprits. I tihnk system restore uses like 15% of your hard drive by default, think you can change that size in the backup and restore settings.

Don't turn off system restore...I cannot tell you how many times I have had to fix what would be a simple problem, but the PC owner turned off system restore.

Also, you used a beta product to test your system and it reported an number--don't be surprised if it is inaccurate.

Run a chkdsk /f and reboot--Windows may be misreporting free space as used and a chkdsk will clear it.

Use a reliable program to see where your space is going (spacemonger) and uninstall programs you don't need.

Use ccleaner to clear all the junk files.

Finally, you've got 85 gb free--worry about things like system restore when you 10gb free.

So you must have nothing but a stripped-down OS installed on your hard drive if you're really only using 17.394 GB on your hard drive currently.

The better question isn't what's "wasting" 50GB of space, but rather, what else is buggy about this beta you just ran, since it appears to be misreading your hdd usage.
