hi, i just bought a new laptop (hp c2d 1.5) and added a gig of ram (now 2 gigs)

everything is fine except that the new laptop came with vista home premium and i really liked vista home basic which was on my last laptop. ( i dont like all the bells and whistles that premium comes with and how it taxes performance with that)

can i make nome premium into basic by turning off all those things?

or do i need to actually buy and install home basic in order to get the fast performance and much faster bootup that i had on my older laptop?

It shouldn't be too hard. Basically, turn the visual scheme to Vista Basic instead of Aero. That'll be the most taxing on your PC.

You can turn off the Aero features that I presume you are talking about. Right click the desktop, choose "Personalization" and then Window Color and Appearance. Now desect "Enable Transparency". If you want to full around with it a bit more then you can go to the properties of Computer, select "Advanced System Settings" and then "Settings" under Performance. Here you can turn off other features like shadows under the mouse pointer. Play around until your heart is content.

That said, Aero doesn't task the system a huge amount more than normal. In no way do you need to repurchase Vista.

    firstoff, thanx for the help.

i tried turning off what you suggested (aero, transparancy) as well as all kinds of other useless features in vista home permium however i am still unable to get a decent boot time like i had with my acer amd sempron 1.8 and vista home basic.

looking at system information, it tells me that i have about 1.3ghz of available ram.
the older acer 1.8 with vista basic gave me 1.5ghz of available ram, so premium is still taxing more of my ram even after turning off all these things.

    am i missing something still?

i will try the tweaks in due time, however first i would like to get my machine into a state that my older one with vista basic was in (as far as boot time and usage of ram goes) and that was without any tweaks, so theoraticaly i should be able to do the same with home premium before i start any sort of tweaks no?
