Vista uses unused memory, thats just how it is. When the computer needs it for something else it will release most of that memory. So dont worry about it.
-
and wat about a processor being used at 58% at idle?
edit: well its actually fluctuating from that high.. back to like 2% and then up again... all i have working is IE and AIM.... -

background stuff, vista when its new is doing alot in the background, searching for updates, indexing your files ect... It will probably stop after it has had time to settle in.

58% CPU usage at idle sounds extreme. It might just be a temporary thing, but if it persists, you definitely have a problem.
The memory usage doesn't mean much though. As said above, Vista uses a lot of otherwise unused memory to cache recently opened programs and similar, but will release the memory if another application needs it. -
With an absolutely CLEAN install of Vista-Biz-64, my IFL-90 was using between 0.8 and 1.1 GB of RAM (laptop came with 2GB). After bumping RAM up to 4GB, it always seems to be using 1.2 GB.
So, I don't think your RAM usage is out of line. -
Try THIS. Make sure to choose the version of Vista you are using i.e. 64 or 32.
Update KB 938979
According to MS KB Article 938979 this update resolves following issues on vista
• You experience a long delay when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
• A memory leak occurs when you use the Windows Energy screen saver.
• If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is hosted by a Windows XP-based or Windows Server 2003-based computer.
• When you write data to an AVI file by using the AVIStreamWrite function, the file header of the AVI file is corrupted.
• When you copy or move a large file, the "estimated time remaining" takes a long time to be calculated and displayed.
• After you resume the computer from hibernation, it takes a long time to display the logon screen.
• When you synchronize an offline file to a server, the offline file is corrupted.
• If you edit an image file that uses the RAW image format, data loss occurs in the image file. This problem occurs if the RAW image is from any of the following digital SLR camera models:
• Canon EOS 1D
• Canon EOS 1DS
• After you resume the computer from hibernation, the computer loses its default gateway address.
• Poor memory management performance occurs.
My memory usage went from 52% to 38%.
And since you have the same notebook, you should see a similar decrease.
Edit: Especially since we both are using Vista x64. -
Have you checked in Task Manager to see what process is at 58% cpu usage? That would be a good place to start.
-
My Vista64bit uses at least 1GB @ 50processes.
-
Leave the Task Manager up for awhile to see what CPU usage is over time. I wouldn't be surprised if IE is using a good amount at times - sometimes my Internet browser does that.
Also make sure it isn't 58% only when Task Manager starts up - it has a tendency to jump to 100% when Taskman starts on single-cores.
