As jpagel has mentioned, Avast is a good program to use. If your also looking for a firewall, Zonealarm is quite a good product. They also do some antivirus software, however, I'm not too sure of how good it is, as I haven't tried it myself.

Actually, in Zone Alarm 7, they developed it in conjunction with Kaspersky, so it's very good. I'm using it right now

I use Sygate Personal Firewall. Its free, and its effective. ZoneAlarm's free firewall is also good.

I remember someone saying this, I forgot who: Antivirus software are like air bags. They give your protection in case of accidents, but if you do something stupid, you are still going to get hurt. Any anti-virus software will give you a good degree of detection, but the most important thing is to be smart don't go to websites like get-free-cracks.com or trojians-united.co.uk

Credit due to delta901 over at FW for the following information:

-it is based off v6.0.0.299 of Kaspersky AV.

-it has all the same scanning abilities, services, processes and icon locations (logon and logoff screens in windows) as the normal Kaspersky.

-it downloads the same antivirus databases as the real KAV6.

Cons: It is just a 1 year license. Good enough for most, not enough for some. The license is also exclusive to this product. The activation key you receive when signing up through the AOL website works ONLY in AOL Active Security Shield. I tried it in KAV6 and it failed saying its not a license for KAV6.

Oddly, the Scan menu is grayed out even though it works 100%. It is very weird.

It is a slimmed down version of KAV6. Differences are the following:

-Web Antivirus has been removed. This is a necessary feature of KAV6, which immediately scans web cache and such. A big hole is left without it.

-Proactive Defense has been removed. This is a feature which scans all process requests and alerts you of them, asking for your permission to allow them or not. This is becoming the norm with security software. KAV6 has it, Spyware Terminator has it. I think it is the future of security software. It is too bad they removed it.

-Trusted zone settings have been removed. All trusted zone entries can only be added as you get alerted by questionable material.

-Rescue Disk creation abilities have been removed. I never used this tool, but there are some who probably do use it.

-Mail connection monitoring settings have been removed (i.e. monitor POP3/SMTP/etc.)

-Appearance settings (for changing the look and feel of the program) have been removed. This isnt a big deal to most, but maybe to some. It only controls transparency and the system tray icon in KAV6, so its not a big deal.

They removed a few things from there that other free av's do have to offer...

Can someone help me? I am also going to install aol anti virus and use that instead of Avast, Ill also be switching from Norton to Zone alarm.

    Thanks guys

Avast can't access the file when in use - boot into safe mode and run the avast scan, it should remove it then. - good choice on going to ZA
Before doing the Avast in Safe mode, use the AOL scanner and see if it finds any viruses/trojans and removes them (if it does, it probably wont be able to remove them, you'll have to do the same thing in safe mode - if it doesn't go back to avast).
I would stick away from the AOL scanner for these reasons -
    Web Antivirus has been removed
    Proactive Defense has been removed
Mail connection monitoring settings have been removed
So no web/active/mail defense against virus because of aol - yea I really want a AV that does that...

I use bit-defender, it has some of the best detection rates and has a great UI and isn't too harsh on resources.

NOD32 or Kaspersky. Used both, different computers, both used very low resources and stopped about four viruses since 2005. All in all, both offer great protection with little resource use. As of now, I use NOD32 only.
