seems I stumbled across many forums and answers that just didn't work. well now I have the answer. when you change a usb flash drive(thumb drive) to a bootable disk, what happends is it becomes a recognized hard drive. to change it back when windows explorer wont recognize it at all I have the answer.

    1. open computer management. right click computer, type comp man in search bar etc.

    2. open disk management

    3. scroll to the bottom and you will see a disk with the appropriate unallocated space with an icon on the left and a bar on the right showing the unaalocated space.

    4. right click the icon on the left where it says that the disk is offline and click "new spanned volume"

    5. follow the briefs to format and make it active, the rest is self explanatory.

notice most posts do not help with the problem of not being recognized while the drive is showing up in device manager but not windows explorer.

not sure if this needs a guide, but yea -- you need to format and create a volume before you can mount any drive. steps 1 and 2 are easier if you just press 'win + R' and run diskmgmt.msc.
