To get a responsive Vista (ie faster as XP, yes its possible), you'll need min 2GB of ram, a dual core and a faster gfx card.

To experience vista like any other person: 2GB ram, and for the rest you're okay

If you have access to a Vista disc already, it lets you install it as a 30-day trial for free.

But yeah... you'll at least want to get some more memory if you're going to run Vista.

Is that a Dell Dimension 8400 desktop? Sure sounds like it.

With those specs you could run Vista well, but I'd upgrade the ram to 2GB. If it's an Dimension 8400 it has 4 ram slots and is currently using 2 of them (2x 512MB). Put 2x 512MB sticks in the other slots for a total of 2GB (4x 512MB). That CPU is still not too shabby and the X300 SE can handle Vista Aero glass no problem.

Actually Windows Vista comes in 32-bit or 64-bit. If you get 32-bit, then you get a CD with 32-bit version. If you get 64-bit, they will usually offer a CD with 64-bit and a CD with 32-bit as well. When you install Vista (as well as XP), you need to choose between 32 bit or 64 bit. So Windows is strictly 32-bit or 64-bit. 64-bit can however run most 32-bit applications.
