Why does Windows 7 change "turn off display" setting to 20 minutes no matter how many times I select never? I don't have an aversion to energy conservation or anything but I like to keep everything set to never because I don't want the screen dimming or shutting off to interfere with my SSD's garbage collection or TRIM routines when idling.

Windows 7 has changed my power plan settings from the RC thru the RTM. I can change settings to never and within a few reboots it will change back to 20 minutes without my changing it. Sometimes it changes without any restarts or shutdowns, sleep mode or anything. Why is there even an option if it is going to change it back to what "it" wants regardless of what I want?

This is indeed an odd problem. I have heard of Windows 7 doing funny things (like the wallpaper problem on HP machines) but that is due to the manufacture settings. Was this an upgrade? or did Windows 7 come stock on a new pc? Since you said you use to have the RC version, I'm guessing this is an upgrade.

    Recommendations:
    1) Don't use High performance, use balanced instead (same performance as high performance, but will scale down when your not using it. People have reported higher frame rates using balanced).
2)Create a new power plan. Just base it off of an existing one, there is an option to do that somewhere, and change the settings you want and see if that works.

Yeah, it happens to me now and again, I dont know what causes it to reset to the default settings, 20mins without activity to turn a screen off, has Microsoft not heard of global warming :(

Yeah, it's not global warming -- it's climate change :p

trim doesn't happen when idling. it happens the moment some region of disk got unused (file deletion, updating a file to smaller size, etc..). trim happens as instant as disk writes.

other than that, yeah, don't use the high performance mode but the default mode, and try to change there. it works for me, there.

Oh, okay -- I gotcha davepermen, you are making a distinction between TRIM and GC where TRIM happens instantly at the OS level, the physical erasure of the deleted files at the controller level does not. The data is still on the drive even though it shows up as free space within the OS. I have a Samsung controller SSD that only physically does what TRIM tells it when the drive is idle, I think. I think the Intel controller can reset deleted blocks to erased in real time which is nice.

Back on the topic of Windows power plans, no matter how many times I change when to turn off display to "never", it always reverts to 20 minutes. So far, I have found no solution to this problem.

that happens with all power plans? have you messed with uac?

well, all i know is my ssds don't care about "system idle". if they have nothing to do, they clean up. every free second.

No, I like UAC and yes every power plan is set to never for when to shut off display.

and i guess it's set like that for both battery and on-ac...

just taking out the obvious, but i have no idea right now :( (hopefully, that at least bumps the topic a bit up for someone who knows more.. )

oh, actually, one thing.. you log off, right? to run your gc.

i think the energy options are stored per user? if so, you have individual settings at the logon screen, independent on the user..

just another random idea.. (now how to set those.. might need some registry copypaste from the CURRENT_USER to .DEFAULT or something.. no clue right now, i would have to test)
