Hey guys, i'm getting a windows vista laptop in the mail any day now, and was wondering what can i use to transfer files like music, windows and excel docs, pictures, and other stuff to my windows vista laptop from the xp home computer.

Can i just use a hard drive, like say, my ipod or someother one?

Or could i use an ftp client? Using an ethernet cable.

Or should i just spend 25 bucks on a cable specifically used for this purpose?

I would just use an external hard drive and a program like SyncBack may be...

Or u could use your iPod too, though I am not well versed with iPod n such for these things :) Cheers.

A crossover cable should only cost you $5 or so, but it isn't a very fast way to transfer data. There should be a way to use your iPod, though.

Any USB 2.0 device should be fairly fast. I use an external hard drive and the SD or CF cards with a reader.

Vista will "like" having your files somewhere under the C:\USERS\ yourusername folder. Which is quite nice and refreshing after the seemingly random placement of files in XP.

i used my ipod to do it. go into iTunes, (with ipod connected) click on your ipod, and check the box saying "enable disk use". now go into my computer and your ipod will be there to transfer data to. i transfered all my game data and itunes library across like this.

only thing is when you connect it to the new computer itunes will load telling you to format the ipod. DONT DO IT! instead you need your itunes user name and password to authorise the new computer to use your existing library stored on the ipod. the option is found in the tool bar along the top.

if that doesnt work you will need to copy the itunes music folder from program files (i think) to your ipod through "my computer", copy it to "my music>itunes" on the new computer and then format the ipod and reload everything again.

For me, getting an external HDD (USB or firewire connected) was the best thing I ever did. I put all my non-system files on it and have the freedom of knowing I can reinstall Windows whenever I please with no loss of data and the peace of mind that I'm safe if the system fails.

The other options here are fine too, but I find some kind of large drive (or USB flash drive if it has enough memory for all your files) to be the most convenient.

Just make sure that your laptop can power it if you get a USB-connected HDD.

I have xp on my home pc and have an m15x coming on sat. I plan on just using an external hdd. My friend uses and hdd for his file/data transfers and it can be slow but it's nice and simple.
