    Good afternoon everyone,
The cable tech.arrived today to install hi-speed cable service. He said he could not install it on my desktop because my modem for the desktop (windows 98) was too old, slow, etc.I settled for getting the hookup for my 2 day old laptop.would you guys & girls tell me how I can transfer some/all of my old "stuff " from my desktop to my laptop. The desktop is still connected to dial up service, but I don't know for how long.I am typing from the desktop.I also need to get this forum transferred to my new laptop. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Connect the two PCs using an Ethernet Port and use the XP Files And Transfer Wizard in Start, Accessories, System Tools.

Or simpler, you'll have to use an external hard drive or something.

External HDD for the win. That's what I'm currently doing with my laptop since I'm moving from W2K to Vista. Yeah, I totally missed XP altogether.

I made a mistake in my post.I should have said my desktop is still hooked up to dialup,my laptop is now on hi-speed cable.I assume i can still use your technique for the transfer.

For the external HDD? Sure. Just plug the HDD into a USB port in your desktop and drag the files you want, disconnect the HDD safely (make sure to eject the hardware from the icon) and then plug it into a USB port in your laptop and drag the files from the HDD to wherever you want on your laptop.

Can't say much about the other method since I'm not familiar with XP, but if it's as it reads, then just connect your desktop and laptop with an ethernet cable and use the XP transfer wizard.
