hello! in a few days i ll buy an IBM R40 notebook with XP pro. priorities are synchronization and security software. do I need extra software for these or it will be fine with the XP pro? Any suggestions for reliable software solutions? what other software is essential for a notebook user from your point of view?

Essential software stops at Office 2003 for me, and maybe a few games. I don't understand the sync and security question though. What do you want to sync with? What kind of security do you need?

synchronization with the desktop at the end of the day (or week [xx(]) on office and palm applications. I am working on site at food industries and some times I have to go away from the notebook and don't want strangers to look at my files. Can I secure specific folders using the standard XP Pro or will I need extra software? I have tried Apptraka on my desktop:it logs all the files opened and it can run in stealth mode which is quite nice for the interrogation that could follow among the people that were near the notebook [} :)]

I don't know what you have in mind, but syncing a notebook to a desktop is a mess, unless you use the briefcase with comes with Windows. Securing folders is a feature in Windows, although I'm sure there are 3rd party apps that are more extensive. You could just get one with biometric scanner to keep everyone out.
