does anyone know where the start up wallpaper is located in windows directory? i found it and changed it before but i could not locate it now...

    thanks!

note: what i meant with the start up wallpaper is the wallpaper that comes up before the logon screen.

ok here's what you need to do:

    1. you should first know the name of your start up wallpaper. (if you do not know, just navigate in C:\Windows directory and look for your wallpaper- i'm sure you know the look of your start up wallpaper. it's an image file of course)

    2. prepare the wallpaper you want to be your start up wallpaper.

    3. then open this directory C:\Windows\[name of your wallpaper].

    4. check what type of image your default wallpaper is. mine is in bitmap (i'm not sure whether all the startup wallpaper are in bitmap).

    5. if it is in bitmap change your replacement wallpaper into the same type. thus if the default is bitmap change your prepared replacement into bitmap. (note: i'm not sure if other image type will do. just make your replacement wallpaper the same type with your default startup wallpaper to be sure).

    6. rename your replacement wallpaper with same name as your default startup wallpaper. mine is "amber flow" so i change my replacement wallpaper with "amber flow." (note: by doing this you won't have to do some registry tweaks and changing some paths)

    7. after doing this just copy and paste it in C:\Windows.

    8. it will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing file with the same name. click yes.

    9. restart and see the change!!!

    enjoy!!!

By "startup wallpaper", are you guys referring to the Windows logo that appears when booting? If so, I do not see this in the Windows directory...

Probably not, that is usually hidden in the ntoskrnl.exe file. It was this way with 2000/XP. Not sure if Vista is the same.

when i said "startup wallpaper" or "startup screen" , i was referring to the screen/wallpaper that comes up before the logon screen in xp. On my compaq notebook the startup screen is the compaq wallpaper. it will flash before the logon screen.

i change it to something else as i said in my previous post.

 My HP logo screen stays on screen for all of 2 seconds or so. I would imagine yours is the same? Unless you're going for a 'Fight Club' thing and putting something there... but then it'll go so quick you're not sure if you saw what you think you saw (sorry, you have to have seen the film!)

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying qohelet. This isn't really of much significance though... you only see it for a couple seconds. Also, with Vista, this image is replaced with the Vista wallpaper you see all of the web.

TweakUI can change it by copying the wallpaper settings of your logon to the welcome screen.

TweakUI > Logon > Settings > check Wallpaper > Copy Now

That makes the current wallpaper you have in your login the one used on the welcome screen.
