Personally I have been using VLC for a while for media that have asbtract codecs because it seems that VLC has alot of support for the abstract.

However SMplayer isn't that bad either.

I used to think VLC was the god of multimedia players. But KMPlayer does a lot more than VLC and is a lot more configurable. I would give it a try.

    I like VLC.

But there is no problem with installing and using both, before deciding which to make default.

Mplayer is clearly the best media player ever, so I'd go with smplayer.

i'd been looking for a good media player for a while, without much luck, and then i stumbled upon this thread. i have to say, i'm really liking smplayer. it's just as good as vlc or kmplayer in terms of compatibility, but it's faster and lighter, at least on my machine.

Assuming you all have tried both SMPlayer and VLC, why would you guys choose VLC or SMPlayer? All I'm seeing here is a few word sentences (except one or two) that say "VLC for sure" instead of solid reasoning behind why you choose it. I'd appreciate it if you helped both me and the OP by giving more detailed information on why you chose what you chose.

Fair point. I use VLC because it was the best player I could find at the time. But that was a long time ago, things may have changed, but since I'm happy with VLC, I still use it.

Maybe I should look around again too.

On windows I preferred to use CCCP with Media Player Classic which is included, I'm not sure on how things may be for SMPlayer on Windows but if it works as well as it does for me on Ubuntu then it's pretty much on par with CCCP so it all comes down to a preference.

my reasons for choosing smplayer over vlc, mpc, and kmplayer:

    1. smaller than vlc and kmplayer.
    2. plays more files than mpc and on par with vlc and kmplayer. no need for extra codecs (as with mpc).
    3. the portable version does not create registry keys (like kmplayer) or useless directories (like vlc and mpc).
    4. loads more quickly than any of the alternatives.
    5. pauses instantaneously (not like vlc).
    6. automatically loads subtitle files.
    7. less clunky than vlc and kmplayer (feels more responsive).

I like KMPlayer (not the same as that SMPlayer OP was talking about) over VLC because KMPlayer lets you access the controls when you hover the mouse in fullscreen whereas VLC does not. Plus KMPlayer has all of its codecs integrated like VLC so it plays almost anything right after install.

the latest version of vlc is a little "big" for me.
are there any reasons i should keep vlc or should i switch to something else?
