    hi

I was looking at my friend's ibook and noticed that when not used for a few minutes the screen saver first reduces the brightness of the screen for a period of time and then the screen shuts off altogether.

Do anyone know if there's a way to make WindowsXP do this or is it only available on Macs. To me this seems like a great way to extend battery life while still being able to see what's on your screen.

    On battery or on AC?

When my laptop is on battery, and its idling, the backlight turns off after a few minutes then it shuts off.

Try playing around in Control Panel -> Power Options

Also, look at your default power management program(For ASUS we have Power4Gear which is very useful) or use Notebook Hardware Control

Same here - if I leave my notebook idle on battery, the screen will dim itself after a few minutes to save power.

Notebook hardware control is a good place to start, as posted. Set your power options to "Portable/Laptop".

right click on the desktop > properties > screen saver > power > you'll see drop down boxes where you can configure the notebook to "Turn off monitor:" after X mins/hours

just curious about something, are the power schemes there just to control the settings you can adjust or are they set to change other things that aren't adjustable?

the reason i ask is becuase i deleted the ones i didn't use and wonder if there is anything there besides different schemes for turning on and off moniter/turning off harddisks/going to stand by.?

Check your power options and in the scheme that you want set it to hibernate at the time lag that you want, as you said, 'screen shuts off'.......
this is the easiest way on windows....saves a lot of battery time...
(having said that I've had a few issues saving battery that i posted elsewhere....nothing connected to my advice here...this will work eminently..)

The Preset ones are only groupings of the available settings. You can set the parameters you want and click "Save As" and add one to the list, if you want.
