try reinstalling norton and then uninstall the liveupdate first

Alternatively, there is a couple of uninstall tools on the symantec website, one for the earlier versions of Norton, and one for the more recent ones.

Unfortunately, I don't recall the exact link at the moment, but a bit of digging around should find it.

Also you might try uninstalling in safe mode. I am not sure it will work but could be worth a shot if you cannot locate those clean up/uninstall utilities

uninstalling in safe mode and uninstalling live update first didn't work.

it takes quite a bit of space so i would really want to remove it.

Go into the Control Panel and uninstall all the Norton Programs that are listed, leaving Live Update for last.

If you're already done that check in Start/Run type in msconfig and under the StartUp tab uncheck any items to do with Symantec or Norton.
