is there a difference of quality when watching dvd movies if using cyberlink power dvd or videolan?
what about when viewing avi files when using divx or videolan(or is the divx codec applied to videolan like it is applied to wmp?)?

no, the quality is a function of the encoded file's quality and has nothing to do with the playback application

Codecs must be downloaded separately, unless provided with the video player.

Just go to www.free-codecs.com to download the latest codecs and great codec packages.

I personally like the K-Lite Codec pack.

    Cheers,
    Mike

no, i dont think you'll need to download any codecs with VLAN. i haven't hit a video file format yet that it can't play "out of the box".

And if someone recommends you download a Codec Pack, I say 'Run Forrest'. Generally they cause more problems and conflicts than getting just the right Codec. G-Spot or a similar program will tell you exactly what you need, if and when a file won't play.
