hi all. lately i've been experiencing regular hanging / shutdown of programs, windows explorer and xilisoft. there maybe more programs, but so far these are the only two i've experienced this with. the following appears when the programs hang

It is hard to guess the problem without more info about when it happens. What is going on when it happens? Have you removed any spyware/viruses lately? More info is required. But if explorer is crashing it is a fairly serious issue. It could be a software conflict, but it is not good that explorer is shutting down.

sometimes i would just be exploring my hd, going in/out of folders, and it crashes. i've run ad-aware, avg anti-virus, regscrub and cleaned/removed everything they found. but still the programs crash.

Try reinstalling xili, Explorer probably isn't the problem here. Xili hanging is more than likely leaving Explorer in an unusable state. You might try cleaning out any relevant settings from your docs & settings directory, and maybe even clean out your registry if the problem persists after a reinstallation.

One knock on Windows is that a lot of times when an explorer window crashes, the whole explorer shell crashes. It's a big pain, but a pretty common one. It's not likely a windows issue, though, probably xili.

    What is xilisoft anyway?

I doubt xilisoft is the issue. What concerns me is that you ran regscrub. it is possible that it deleted an important key. Unistall xilisoft and do not reinstall it, see if the problem persists. If it does try safe mode. One other thing to try is the system file checker. Go into the command prompt (Run->cmd) and type sfc /scannow

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you will need a windows disk to run System File Checker. It needs to check if the files match the installation disk.

Good call on regscrub. It's a great program, but you don't want to just delete keys. You have to be careful with registry cleaners.

You are correct I forgot about that. But a restore disc supplie by the manufacturer should do the trick. Hopefully he got that. I really hate tht they don't send you the copy of Windows that you paid for.

When I bought my MSI it came with an XP Pro disk. It also came with a separate drivers and apps disk. Major manufacturers have their own restore disks (or you get none and have to make them from restore partition). I like it with the ODMs better. It helped me make an unattended setup with nlite.

Maybe you can try to click on "click here" and see what's actually going on.

cashmonee, i did what you said. i inserted the OS CD that came with my laptop, and ran sfc/scannow. there was a popup saying its checking to see if the files are the same. but after the status bar reached completion, nothing! there was no report of anything! the program just finished, and i was back at the prompt.

jimc, i will post what is on "click here", as im pretty sure i won't be able to make heads or tails with it.

ive checked other programs. nero and sonic were crashing too. firefox, outlook and yahoomessenger seems to be ok, as i have them running all through this.

Ok, so we know your windows system files are all intact...which is good.

Once you "click here" copy that and search MS's knowledge base. Usually windows problems like this are documented and can be fixed.

Always good to get a 2nd opinion...especially with spyware software (especially with FREE spyware software). There are a lot of good programs out there, and if you have a problem one spyware scan usually doesn't get it all.
