can somebody recommend a program that can monitor bandwidth speed? something similar to NHC would be ideal, in that it displays the current speed in the notification area. is there such a program?

    thanks.

    Bandwidth monitor.

There are lots of these kinds of programs. Peruse thru a google search to find one you like.

I use DUmeter (pay). I like the graph plot and the option to average the value rather than get instantaneous speed.

i downloaded samurize, but i'm unclear with the installation procedure. where do i find the internet services manager? is that in the control panel?

    Installation
    ---------------------------

Installation is very easy, copy the .dll file to a folder and give every one executable permission for that folder and the files inside. Then open the iis (Internet Services Manager).

Right click on your server name and choose properties. Master Properties, Click Edit > Choose ISAPI Filters and add the .dll component.
    Restart IIS on your server.

i don't know where you got that from?

you just need to install samurize, then create a config with a meter that monitors your bandwidth.

Sounds like he's trying to do the Server installation...
Which you shouldn't need if you're just using XP.
Either that or he downloaded the wrong file.... the 1.63 install file is an .exe file. It's NOT the first link on the download page, that's a clock client. the install is the next one down; samurize_1631.exe

I'll have to check this out when I get home...
How's the resource usage on this tool? Does it start up a bunch of extra processes?

no, it's one process in the background. i currently monitor cpu usage, cpu temp, cpu speed (mhz), fan speed, hd space, bandwidtdh up and down, stats from weather.com, battery life, calendar, and buddy lists and it uses about 5 mbs of ram.

check out the screenshots on the site. they give an example of how robust the app is. you can configure your monitors in virtually unlimited ways; graphs, progress bars, text, etc etc etc.

Pretty nice little app. Although you do need to also run MotherBoard Monitor for it to get the temps and fan speeds. So it's actually two processes that need to run.
Looks like it uses fewer resources than Sysmetrix though, from my limited comparison. And sysmetrix doesn't use much to start with, so this using less is pretty good.

actually, you don't. there's about a million plugins built that monitor anything you want. just gotta browse through the download section.

    i don't run mbm.

Hmm?? On the default ini it has a section for fan speed, case temp and cpu temp.
And when I check the config edit because those three aren't working, it says "motherboardmonitor not active". And they won't work until I start up MBM.

In fact, this is spelled out in one of the FAQ's on the samurize site - http://www.samurize.com/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=42
The FAQ does say you can close MBM and load it using samurize, but I haven't been able to get it to do that. Off to the forums I go...
