strange.. i have an inspiron e1405 that i recently got and when i try to play java based games at yahoo, the start menu and widgets/dock start flashing and twitching really fast. i disable the widgets and dock, but the start menu sort of vibrates still. as soon as i exit the java applet though, it all goes back to normal. what's the problem?

The first thing to do is to make sure you have the java plugin. The easiest way to check if you do is to go to: http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. If you see a dancing image then you do have the plugin installed. If that is the case reply here and I'll see what I can come up with as a solution.

i see the dancing image but there's a message right above it that reads:

"You are using an older version of Java techno
    the latest version from Java.com

    Your Java configuration is:
    Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
    Version: 1.4.2_03
    Operating System: XP
    OS Version: 5.1"

i downloaded the update 7 from the site, installed it etc. but the problem persists.

I used to have a problem with my buddy list twitching and flickering while playing java-based games. I think my solution was to minimize the window. I don't really remember, this was a looooong time ago.

Try completely uninstalling Java 1.42, and installed Java 2 (Version 1.5)
