Hi I am trying to install SP2 onto my computer but when i start the install it gets stuck in the early phase of the checking product key and it stalls there...my xp is genuine so I dont know why it is doing that...anyone able to help me?

It might be trying to initialize the rest of the install process. What hardware do you have, what type of CD are you using (OEM, retail, etc), and what type of key (OEM, retail, etc) do you have? Also, does the disc have scratches on it?

Do you mean you are doing a clean install of XP SP2 or the SP2 service pack onto and existing and working XP or XP SP1 installation?
If the former, what hardware do you have? Maybe there is something that Windows can't figure out. Hanging installations used to be a common problem.

Yes I am trying to install just the SP2 onto the my current SP1... I have a HP pavilion zt3000 in terms of hardware I have an intel m 1.8ghz with the intel wireless and motherboard. ati radeon 9200, fujitsu 60gb HDD, in terms of other hardware please tell me what else i need to name... besides this.
Oh as for the type of key and cd...its a OEM i believe and the SP2 is just a normal install trying to use the windows update service. -
I guess if you can't get it to install via Update, you can order the cd:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/how.mspx
Hopefully it can be resolved without coming to that. -
i actually have the CD, but that doesn't work either.
this is getting me pissed because i dont know whats wrong, and i cant update any of my software because i dont have sp2...argh!! -
Since you have the CD, try restarting in Safe Mode, and install it then. Not sure if it complains or not, but it may work better, because fewer services are started up and fewer files are locked.
problem with SP2...
