my laptop views the built in subwoofer and the speakers as 2 different devices. So, is there a way to get them both to play simultaneously? Alienware M14x if that helps. Thanks in advance.

By default Windows does not support simultaneously playback through multiple devices. You can only choose one device, which is set as your "default device." Microsoft says it is this way by design.

You could give Virtual Audio Cable application a try to push sound through two devices simultaneously

But the OP's issue is different. The audio devices in this case are not multiple devices. The built in subwoofer should be handled fine with the appropriate audio driver.
