    fresh install of win7 pro
when I plug in an external HDD, it shows up in storage management, but not in 'my computer'.

I have to manually assign a drive letter, then it shows up in my computer....

    Ideas?

I have had that happen to two of my external hdd`s in Win7 and i had to add the drive letter manually myself, is was frightening when your storage hdd does not show up at all, I thought i had lost everything.

I dont know why it happens.

It usually happens when if the ext drive was previously manually assigned drive letter (commonly occurs when it was assigned by another comp but it does occur it was only used on one machine) and that drive letter assignment is also assigned and active to another.

Example ... well this what I'm able to reproduce on my computers.

    Lets say
Comp A has C: and D: assigned to their receptive partition of a harddrive and Comp B has C: to a partition and D: to a thumbdrive manually assigned via disk management.

I remove the thumbdrive from Comp B and plug it in to Comp A. Comp A would detect but unable to assign a drive letter cause D: is already in use. So I have to manually change the thumbdrive to Z:
    -------------------------------

I remember that I managed to bork the windows automount because I previously automatic assigned a thumbdrive to an unassigned letter at the time but later I made a partition assigned to that letter. Minor nuisance.
