So my friend calls me and needs help, so I'll resort to you guys.

when she starts her laptop, it won't load the OS. It gets stuck at the windows loading screen.

It says something to this effect:

Windows coudld not start because the following file is missing: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM

I'm almost certain it's a trojan virus but I'd like to hear what advices you all have. Thank you very much, this is a good community.

Sorry, If I've posted in the wrong section.

You can try using the repair console. Boot to the OS disk.

    moving to software...

Doesn't really matter what caused it. But what likely happened is that a file that use to be in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is either corrupt or missing. What vespoli means is enter your Windows bootdisc into the CDROM and boot off of it. It will lead you to a recovery console, in which you want to chose a recovery installation of Windows.

is the windows bootdisc the same thing as the windows xp cd?

then it will lead me to a recovery option?

    thanks

Yep. It could also be the recovery disc.

yes. you put the cd in the drive and reboot, hopefully your computer is set to check the cd drive before the harddisk for a bootable drive. if so, it should say "press any key to boot from CD" or something. It'll load a bunch of drivers and then you'll have the option to do a recovery.

Yeah, the windows xp cd. You'll either have to hold down one of the function keys (f5 or f8 usually etc) during bootup to boot from the CD, or enter the BIOS setup and change the order of the devices that the comp boots from.

Recovery Console won't fix the problem. You need to call Microsoft and they'll walk you through the process to reload the file. I don't remember the commands off hand, but they'll have you boot with the OS disc to DOS and have you enter a couple lines of command. Good luck
