With Vista, any new driver is usually a 'fix'. ;)

Just uninstall through Add/Remove Programs → reboot → Run CCleaner → reboot once more → Install the newer driver

    Check CPU usage.

You could also try uninstalling the Realtek driver and seeing if the built-in Microsoft audio driver gives better results. You can always reinstall the Realtek driver if you don't like the result.

When I reinstalled Vista, I didn't bother reinstalling the Sigmatel driver for my audio chip... so I'm now just using the Microsoft built-in driver. Music playback seems smoother to me. Although there could be other factors. Or maybe it's just my imagination... I'm not really certain. But I prefer not to run any more third-party drivers than I really need.

@ScifiMike12, thanks! I think the lagging is gone.
@swarmer, regarding CPU usage, I think it might has to do with it as well. I have no idea why my CPU is hovering around 15-20% for firefox in vista against 3-5% in XP. same background apps.

No, 20% is ok. It's similar on mine.

The reason is that XP's audio mixer is optimized for low CPU usage, while Vista's is optimized for audio quality. (I read this somewhere or other once. ;) ) This makes some sense, since CPUs became much more powerful in the 6 or so years between XP's release and Vista's release. (Ideally it would let you choose though.)

It's only if one of your cores was being used close to the max that I'd blame CPU usage for the problem.
