    You should first find the installation logs for each of the updates that didn't take to see what the error was - you should be able to pinpoint a fairly specific point at which the installation failed. The _Vista updates installation log should be at the following location:

    You should also get the KB number for each update that failed (e.g., _Vista SP1 is KB935791) and search the Microsoft_Vista online solution center to see if your issues have been addressed by Microsoft. For example, Microsoft has addressed several issues in which _Vista SP1 was not offered via automatic updates in KB article KB948343. There is another article covering general installation issues (albeit with the beta versions, I believe) at KB947366. You may also want to look at the _Vista Update Readiness Tool, described in KB947821.

    i spent waay too much time trying to figure it out. my home premium was a boot leg copy. adn even though i have a legit key, it had missing files. so naturally vista wouldnt update past sp1 or certain updates for sp0. i upgraded to ultimate and now my 'shiba is running like a champ. thanx for everyones help.
