Is that an internal or external HDD?

If its external, what happened is that the HDD switched itself off.

For me under Vista the HDD restarts - under XP I had to cut the power supply and restart my drive...

Open your video folder, click on Organize and then click Folder and Search Options.

Now click on the View tab.

    Check
    Always show icons, never thumbnails
Hide extensions of known file types
    Remember each folder's view settings

    Uncheck
Display file size information in folder tips
Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items
Show preview handlers in preview pane

    OK

Can't recall if a reboot is necessary....

When a folder is set to display media content, it scans all the files to retrieve information like length of the media file, aspect ratio, codec etc.. this takes some time, especially when you have lots of large files. If you want quick access to the folder then change the folder type to a normal folder :Right click on the folder > Properties > Customize > What kind of folder do you want ? > All items.

Well, that's more of a workaround than a fix, Gerry.

The fact remains that it should not take that long to load the folder. It didn't in XP, and it doesn't in any other OS other than Vista or W7.

This setting is already set to "All Items" (or "General Items" in W7), but the problem is still there.

    Hi,

    I had the same problem.
Every time I opened the folder or chaged a file name or added a file, windows would have to rescan the folder and it would take a while. It got fustrating to say the least in the end I fixed it by going into the folder properties, advanced and enabling the "folder is ready for archiving". I have no idea how or why it became unchecked but that fixed it and I have not had a problem since.
