after sending my new laptop in and everything after it having a bad hardrive when i baught it i sent it into hp. they replaced the hardrive and fixed a few other things as well. now this doesn't seem to effect anything orthe performance of the computer, but everytime i start up a right after the compaq logo apears a black screen apears for like 5 seconds and one thing on it that i notice is "media test failure . check cable" . What does this meen? i just got the hardrive replaced so everything should be working perfect, as it seems to be , just this small error, has me wondering what it meens. help would be great on how to fix this or what to do about it.

Go into the BIOS and deselect to boot from network.

sorry didn't completely say what it said, didn't have time to read it all.. but this is what it fully says.

For Realtek RTL0139 blah blah more numbers PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13
PXE -E61: Media Test failure, check cable
PXE - MBF: Exiting PXE Rom

not sure if all thats exactly right but thats generaly what it said. so if you could just give me the steps on how to fix it that'd be great.

Its normally a case of pressing either the "Del" or "F2" button on startup. Be careful not to change any of the main settings from the default value, as it may cause problems with the notebook.

Go into the BIOs, and look for a tab that says "Boot Order" or "Boot Order Priority". In therw you will see a number of different devices, in a list. You need to set it so that the hard disk sits higher up in the list, than network option.

The boot devices are those that the computer will scan, and look for an operating system. As soon as it finds one, it will boot of it. At the moment, the computer scans the network before it gets to the hard disk and thats whats causing the messege to come up.

do you meen load setup defaults? thats the only thing i saw out of what you guys suggested. the options at top are main, security, system configuration, diagnostics, exit. i can't find the deselect boot from network anywhere..

    FYI:

They probably set it to boot off of PXE (a way for a system to boot off of a network configuration) when they're repairing it so they have access to all the tools they need to test and such from a network OS image, possibly a Linux system rescue type system, without having to deal with your software or anything. Pretty slick idea, actually ;)

What the "media test failure" thing basically meant is that it didn't detect a network cable plugged in, and it timed out after those few seconds.
