i have a laptop pavilion zt1000ic. the laptop is several years old.. where after an hour or more would shut off automatically like i unplugged it.. so i downloaded and installed some free monitoring programs and all of them show the hard drive temperature rising up to 64 c. Id shut it down before it got any hotter so it wouldn't shut down automatically, the CPU temp. stays at 102. I took my laptop apart and cleaned out the fan, removed what little dust was there but the HD is still overheating, I tried a different hard drive and it did the same thing. what could be the problem?

Well, considering how old the Notebook is. It could be a range of things, but, Is any other component getting hot? Making the case hot? You say you cleaned out the fan, but is it working? Can you hear it? Also, when this happens, are the vents being covered up? You could try a cheap Notebook Cooler and see if that makes a difference.

The fan is running and i cleaned out the vents. I can also hear the fan before i screwed down the fan i made sure the fan was spinning and working. nothing else seems to be getting hot

what else can i check and is there a log file somewhere in windows where i can look to see what caused the problem when it crashes

In speedfan the CPU diode temp said 102 c before and after cleaning.
Im assuming CPU diode is the CPU

Yes, 102C is too HIGH for CPU! This can be the issue.

is there a fix for it? does it mean my CPU is at its end of life?? ...and is that why it makes my harddrive heat up

    thanks!

That is true, your high CPU temprature can raise your HDD's temprature. Have you tried to cleane it better?
Or you can take your laptop apart and add new thermal paste, but this is more advanced...

i had it apart and all i know there wasnt any dust on the metal vents over the CPU. thats all my expertise on CPU issues.

first how do i clean it ? then if that doesnt work what paste do i use and where and how do i put that on.

Acctualy, I don't know if it is worth it. You said the laptop is several years old, and if the vents and everthing is clean it can be another problem.

yea i bought it in 2003. i have a newer laptop but i wanted to use this one up.

what else would you try or does it mean the laptop reached the end of the line? is there software to see what else is going wrong, some diagnostic software

I use compressed air and a vacuum cleaner for the vents and inside. Arctic Silver 5 is a simple good and safe thermal paste to use for CPU and graphic card. Be careful with the screws tightening up the heat-sink. Do not over tighten them and follow the sequence.

    Good luck.

so separate the heat sink from the CPU and add the paste.. is the direction for this somewhere, how much paste do i add? does it dry on its own
