Try AVG, Kaspersky, and Sygate. Yeah Norton is a memory hog.

I'm using Nod32 and it's awesome! I tend to clean boot first when I play games

i found avast and it lowered my pc ram usage from over 400 to just turn on my computer to using 360 while scanning running all my start up stuff and a full virus scan :D i pretty much love it and its free!

Yeah AVG is great. I used to use McAfee, not quite as bad as the infamous Norton but still not so good.

The most annoying thing is that ask the average joe soap about Computer Anti-Virus and the first thing that will spring to their mind is 'Norton'.

I know many such people who constantly choose Norton even over AVG as 'it's the best'.

i agree, i used to have norton and boy it slowed my computer down so much, to the point where it took about 30 minutes for startup, about 15 minutes to get into games, and about 1-2 minutes to start up applications; and i didnt have any viruses on the computer. now ive switched to avast and it is a lot better

I use EZ anti-virus but I might change back to AVG, I have to see if the new version doesn't crash.

Top 3 AV are (not by me,by people who know a lot more than me :) ):

    1.Kaspersky(KAV)
    2.BeatDefender
    3.NOD32

They are not the same of course,KAV has the best scaning machine but consumes most resources of these three AV's and NOD32 consumes the least.
Beatdefender has the best realtime protection and NOD32 is somewhere in between.
You can't make a mistake if you use any of this three AV and I can tell you that KAV is great,I was using it for 3-4 years but now I switched to NOD32 because it consume least recourse and I am satisfied for now (been using it for 3 months).

Have you formatted your HP since you got it? HPs consumer line Pavilion notebooks come with a lot of 'bloatware,' so Norton may not be the only culprit of your high memory usage. Take a look at our Notebook Optimizing Guide for tips to improve your performance.

Switching out of a game is actually very hard task for the computer to do - it is very memory intensive. So, what you are experiencing is normal.

I believe it's "BitDefender" not BeatDefender. Just a thought ;)

Other than that, you nailed the list...might I add, in no particular order. You can't go wrong with any of those three, as each has its bright point.

However, Norton often gets a bad rep because of its high memory usage and many startups it creates. The 2007 version is an improvement, but Symantec should really look at these other programs as models. They do it right.

no i didnt format it because they didnt give me the disks for the os so i would have to put it back to its orginal state anyways but i did uninstall run scans and delete lots of stuff. and it did that when the game was exiting too not just altabbing but after i got avast it seems to run alot better.

Nothing makes a fast computer slow faster then Norton. I swear Intel and AMD paid them to make it like that just to sell dual core CPUs; somehow it makes even them slow.

i highly doubt that Intel and AMD would pay Symantec to make Norton slow down their computers
