For a total nub who isnt very smart with computers who will use random networks besides just at home, what would be the better option.

Any security software by Microsoft is generally a bad idea. That cannot even write a more secure operating system, let alone defend it with their idea of software.

kapersky is a really good antivirus software... but zonealarm got the best firewall.

now... just recently this year; ZoneAlarm launch its new security suite wich contains the best of both worlds The Antivirus Scanner is powered by Kapersky and its firewall uses its own ZoneAlarm firewall. so this to my knowledge are the best security suite currently available.

neither. microsofy sells their security software under OneCare brand. they did purchase a couple of security software company to make it happen (which i forgot the name).

while OneCare is not the best in term of detection, it is the most intergrated and easy to use security suite currently (and probably will ever be for windows) available.

so for "noob" that is one of the possible/good option.

for example; if u buy one of the best security suite available, and don't know how to use it (eg. just click "allow" or "OK") then it is not that effective is it?

I used to suggest BitDefender, but I've had a lot of bad luck with their consumer products lately (Internet Security). Their business oriented products are still nice and light (Pro Plus), but that might not be what you're after. I'd go Kaspersky, or Nod32 with a separate firewall.

Bitdefender used to be the best and probably most likely still is the best for pure virus detection on the market right now. But I have found in testing using trial bitdefender installs that their software is very buggy and bloated.

I currently use kaspersky Internet security and LOVE it, low resources, fast scanning and frequent updates!

As for Zonealarm while version 7 now uses the kaspersky anti virus engine I find that over the last 3 years zone labs hasn't been keeping zonealarm trimmed enough for me and the latest version is quite bloated. I installed a 15 day trial on my desktop a few weeks back and all the services belonging to zonealarm were using over 100mb of memory! To me that is far to much, the truevector service alone was the main culprit.

I use BitDefender 10.. it updates by itself, has lots of features, nice interface, and it has caught every single virus that I have ever (stupidly) gotten! If it finds something fishy it will detect it. I've only had 1 case where it couldn't clean out a virus by itself in regular XP, but in safe-mode it got rid of it. Every time the virus tried to do something it blocked it AND notified me what virus was trying to attack me. Pretty neat software, but can take a while to scan for viruses if your hard drive is pretty full.

Note: It is pretty light on resources, uses about 20mb of RAM.

I've always heard Kaspersky has the highest probability of catching most virus, but if I remember correctly, its takes forever to scan.

Personally I use Zone Alarm, but I also use Bit Defender's free online scanner from time to time. :D

you've heard right, in most test, kaspersky has the highest probability of detect. i used kapersky security suite on one of my pc, and it scan everything fast, it scan virus and spyware in one go, and the next time u scan; it doesn't scan the file that it has previously scanned, unless the file has been modified. and it really is quick. very frequent update too!

but nowdays i used zonealarm 7, for most of my pc.
