MOS Enterprise 2007 is installed on my R61. Everything was running smoothly with no issues or problems at all, until about three days ago when i noticed something funny was going on. I don't know how to exactly describe this problem, so I am just going to give an example of the problem.

Every time i open a word, excel, or powerpoint document, there would be a duplicate version of that document automatically created simultaneously. For example, if i have a word document saved on my desktop as English paper and i opened this document, there will be a new shortcut to this document on my desktop. Every new shortcut created has the same title as the first document, except for the first two letters. The duplicate English paper document would read: ~$glish paper. When i click on the shortcut titles ~$nglish paper it says: windows cannot open this file because there are issues with the contents. Then it says some parts of the file are either missing or invalid. If i close the original English paper document, the ~$nglish paper document will delete itself from the desktop, and its as if this new unable to read file never existed.

If i open up a word, excel, or powerpoint document inside a folder their will be a duplicate link created just as there was the desktop example. The new shortcut will have the first two letters of the title changed to ~$, and will display the same unable to open message as with the desktop example.

Does anybody know what could my problem be, and how to fix this?

That is what Windows call shadow copy of your document. You have nothing to worry about, like you noticed, it will delete itself when you close your document.

I also don't know what you did that only recently you're noticing it (probably you change the setting in Explorer from hide system files to show system files) but it has always been there.

I too am also having this problem, but i didnt think shadow copies visually created another document wherever that file is stored. If i have an excel document saved as Budget in a file called 2008 Revenue, then open the budget file there will be a new file created in the 2008 revenue folder titled ~$dget. As soon as i close out of the budget file, the ~$dget file disappears.

I have turned off my windows automatically back-up feature because i run weekly back-ups on an external hard drive, which makes me think its not the shadow copy feature. My computer has not always done this, and for some reason it is bugging me.

But if it is the shadow copy feature, how do i hide these self-created documents with with the first two letters of the title changed to ~$ ?

Those files are almost certainly the working copy that the app has set up while you've got the document open, and you're probably only just seeing them now because, either intentionally or by accident, you've unclicked the folder option for not displaying hidden files, or the option to hide system files.

Don't know how similar it is on _Vista, but on XP, open an explorer window, left-click on the "Tools" menu, and then left-click on the "Folder Options..." menu item. That will bring up a dialogue box with several tabs at the top. Left-click on the "View" tab, then scroll down and see if the radio button for "Hidden files and folders" is set for "show" or "do not show." Also, check "Hide protected operating system folders" to see if that's enabled or not (it's a tick box, if it's ticked, then that option is enabled).

Ok i now have a new, but very similar problem only with Access documents.

Whenever i open an access document another "shadow" copy is created but this time with a little closed lock in the icon picture. This file with the lock says its record-locking information. The file also cant be opened if i double click on it.

I disabled all the options that said show hidden or shadow copies in the folder options view tab. Does anybody know how to fix this issue?

The file that Access creates is a file with the LACCDB extension. Does anybody know how to disable or hide these type of files form appearing every time i open up Access?

Did you make sure that the options for hiding hidden files and system files were enabled?

This file is also a standard Microsoft file that's created whenever Access is started up, and is supposed to be there, and is not supposed to be accessed. Microsoft has a basic overview discussion of Access 2007 that mentions these files in this article.

A more detailed discussion of the predecessor files in Office 2003 is contained in Microsoft knowledgebase article KB208778.

There is also a discussion of why some of these files might get left over once you've exited Access here.

One question: why has this got you in such a twist? Is it really that important to not see temporary or working files?
