Na... DIVX isn't the best, but compared to XVID, it's better.

Depending on what format you're ripping to and how fast your computer is, encoding time may vary.

E.g. Ripping a raw dvd video in mpeg2 takes about a little over 5 minutes.
-ripping a dvd to DIVX (modded mpeg4) to standard quality about 700mb takes about half an hour for me on my desktop computer.

If you're not planning on burning DivX/XviD discs for a standalone player, x264 is by far the best video codec out there right now for encoding. I use a custom profile and it takes me maybe 6 hours to do a 2-pass encode on a Q6600 @ 3.0 GHz, but it depends on the movie really and your settings.

You mean how to fit 10-15 hours of video onto 1 dvd-r?
You can easily achieve that if you encode it with divx or decent h.264 bitrate. Newer dvd player can play those format directly from a dvd-r is for those people who have those dvd, these format is prefeered over dvd-video.

What "custom profile" do you use?

2pass encoding to h.264 2.5mbit/s from DV takes about 0.5-1 hour for me. Decoding mpeg2 to a workable format takes about 1-2 hours. So it takes 1.5-3 hours to encode dvd to h.264 on a AMD Phenom x4 9550 @ 3.0ghz. :D Overclock rulez :D
