    intel speedstep

    Do anyone know of a piece of software that can activate the intel speedstep technology?
    my asus m5200n is quite noicy and I would like to reduce the hefty 1500 mhz centrino to a somewhat lower clock frequency
    but how?

    You can go to Windows Control Panel, choose Power Options, then under power scheme choose the option of either portable/laptop or max battery. Max battery will keep it the lowest speed, portable/laptop should adjust the speed according to how much power the computer needs.

    Anoter option is downloading a program called Speedswitch XP, from the site:

    This allows for better control than the Windows XP options.

    notebooks should have SpeedStep already enabled. It'll mainly drop the CPU speed when you don't need it or on battery, so it depends on what your power management settings are set at. As Nesbo suggested, set them to Portable/Laptop or any other setting other than Always On. I disabled SpeedStep in the BIOS of my previous NX7000, and it dropped the CPU speed to 600Mhz. Even if I changed the power management settings, nothing helped. I had to re-enable it for me to get the max speed back.
