I don't use iTunes but someone I know asked how they could create a backup of their music. They only have around 4gb or so to backup. I know there is an option to backup to DVD or CD from the program but I am wondering if this is the best way or if there is another way to do it that is better.

    Any information would be appreciated.

In my experience, always use a programs built-in features when available. Since it has a backup/restore feature I'd take advantage of it. However, it can also be backed up by copying the iTunes music folder to your desired destination, which is basically what's being done in the first link below, with the added step of ensuring the data is in one location.

    Backup to external hard drive
    Backup to CD/DVD

Copy or backup to external HDD is the preferred result. I don't know what the best way to do that is but it looks like this is it. I searched that site and didn't find the "backup to external hard drive" instructions.

    Thanks for the info.

If anyone else knows a better way I'm open to it.

Use Explorer and drag the folder to the other drive.

As Swarmer said, just drag the folder. Open the iTunes folder as described in step 2 and open the external drive. Drag (or copy&paste) the iTunes folder to the external drive.

I emailed them the link for the backup to external hard drive option that Gregory posted. They're not very computer literate so the instructions about consolidating the library are a big help.

Thanks for the input people, I do appreciate it.
