    Hi there,
You may have high contrast settings on (via control panel), or set a different theme for the ribbon. Try this:

    1. Click the Microsoft Office ButtonButton image, and then click Word Options.
    2. Click Popular, and then click the Color scheme that you want.

    Hope that helps

Could it be because the OS is configured for best performance and not best appearance?

What OS, and is the person using a different Windows theme or has turned Windows visual effects off?

hey good replies. it is only word 2007 that does this, other programs look fine. it's not a theme nor a windows performance setting issue.

Check in your event logs to see if there are any events logged with respect to Office 2007 that indicate that some resource couldn't be found or couldn't be loaded - from the image posted, it looks like maybe the app cannot find all of its resources and is thus running with a stripped down GUI instead of the fully detailed GUI you're used to.

this is all i could find in the event viewer... any thoughts?

A provider, OffProv12, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\MSAPPS12, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider may cause a security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

also when i open a document, it says microsoft word - non commercial use.

it's word home and student, but surely this is not normal?

nick- tried the color scheme thing. the colors don't change at all. silver, blue, whatever- still looks like the image in the OP.

There is a Microsoft knowledgebase article that might provide some guidance on the OffProv12 issue - KB891642.

There's also a pretty decent thread from a Microsoft forum that discusses the problem here.

huh. i read over all of that stuff. none of these things mention the interface looking like mine. not sure if the offprov12 and the looks of the ribbon are causally related...

her account is an administrator account as well, so permissions should not be an issue. i also tried other administrator accounts on the same computer and it looks as in the OP for all users. weird stuff.

The access permissions issue isn't with the user account, but with the particular system account that the provider, OffProv12 itself uses to run some or all of its processes. In addition to the user-specific accounts, every WinOS comes with a number of built-in "user" accounts that the OS uses for its own purposes. It's that account that the access permissions need to be checked for.

ok. so i installed office 2007 on another computer. the offprov12 error occured again, but everything looks fine. so, as i suspected the offprov12 error has nothing to do with the interface looking as in the original post. still looking for an answer to this if anyone has any other ideas. i will post a solution if i find it.

i have found a solution. for some reason, i changed from a modified xp theme to the default (windows xp), and it is now fine.

weird, since i had a modified theme on another computer and it worked fine.

anyway- if you have this problem, a potential solution is to change your theme to windows xp.
