good bittorrent client

Its not illegal.

Downloading liscensed files are - but downloading non-liscensed and freeware files are not.

BT is an easy and cost effective way to share files which are huge, including home movies, foreign episiodes(Anime in particular), etc. as HTTP 500+ mb files is overload for bandwidth.

It's legal - as long as the downloader uses it legally.

I use Azereus, I'm a main seeder for distrobution for a few scanlation groups I'm a part of. It's pretty loaded with features and very organized.

 

Bittorrent is VERY legal. A limited number of companies are now using it as a primary means of distribution for large software.

Bittorrent is also used quite a bit in the Open Source community, for one good reason - it saves gobs of bandwidth.

Bittorrent is by no means illegal - except companies in the Music Industry want it to be. Really, it's only a protocol for the decentralized distribution of large files - NOT a file-sharing network. Unless downloading a file has been made illegal, there is nothing wrong with Bittorrent.

 

I only know Azureus and BitComet.

Azureus is very nice, loads of advanced features, but is all java, meaning you better have a lot of RAM if you're planning to use it.

BitComet is also good, programmed in C++ I believe. Not that great for seeding, but definitely the leecher's choice.

 

I use KTorrent, which is Linux-only. Rather like it.

 

I did read somewhere that there were actions being taken to limit illigal content over the torrent network ... I cannot recall where I read it and what it was about. Hopefully the network won't be affected for legal users. After all the torrent network is MUCH MUCH better way to exchange freeware and open source than any of the other P2P networks. (guaranteed you are getting the right file that hasn't been played around with and no malware bundled up with it)

I use Bitcomet, it is the only one that remotely functions well with the firewalls on my public access wifi network, for some reason other clients just kill my connection and I cannot connect to users with in a few minutes. Bitcomet manages to connect to quite a large number of users then it stops connecting to any new ones but at least I have quite a few connections by then to allow me to download at a decent speed, mean while my internet becomes useless, cannot browse, its all about a limit on allowed connections I guess. I talked to local tech support, but those guys were too incompetent to understand what was going wrong!!!

BTW anyone tried micro torrent, that thing is amazing, 100K and barely any memory usage ... on the other extreme of azureus

 

No uTorrent???? uTorrent should be the most widely used torrent application on this forum, as it requires the least computer resources and still provides a very decent user interface, meaning you can leave your laptop on (unplugged) seeding/leeching much longer compared to applications like Azureus.

 

i've noticed that after sometime azureus tends to slow my laptop down..does it happen with anyone else? but the browsing speed is good while downloading...i've tried bitcomet and it slows down my browsing speed.

 

I've used Azureus before and thought it was great at first. But since it's programmed in Java it lagg my computer too much leaving it on for so long. So i've moved onto Bitcomet. Same styling. Just no lag.

tear??? you mean cause it to fail? I cannot see why azureus will be more harmful than any other client. But for sure if you are running at high speeds your HDD will be under constant access for LONG times ... that causes it to heat up, especially in a laptop, and might cause it to fail sooner than it might have.

For me at speeds of 200/400 (DL/UL) my HDD is under constant access, even if I increase the disk cache upto 500MB. If I am downloading to my internal drive it heats up to 48C (usually runs around 41-42). For that reason I usually download to an external USB drive which is better cooled and if it fails I won't lose my mind because it don't cost half as much as the 7K60 ... and all the data on the external drive is replacable

 

high speeds as id downloads? my download speed only goes up to 40kb..and why would it be under constant access? is it because it saves everything first? i'm a little confused..sorry

Well under high speed conditions (yes for the downloads) you would be requiring to read and write constantly to the HDD just because of the larger magnitude of data flowing in and out. So the HDD would never go to rest and hence power consumption would be high which translates to more heat.

The saving everything first, if I understand you correctly, with torrents is just a matter of reserving HDD space, those files that are created instantly once you start the download and are the exact size of your download that you have yet to get anything from, are just empty files (empty as in contain no useful data) but with the correct eventual size. Just a way to reserve the space. What the torrent client does is chunk by chunk replace this empty large file with the correct data chunks as they become available until you have the complete file with the same size and the correct data ... which is at the end verified (through hash check) to be free of errors.

Hope that explains a bit how the process works, it is simillar for most P2P sharing protocols, minor differences here and there!

Azereus does slow the computer down, but that wa son my old computer. Nothing like that on my new laptop though

 

i use Azureus . never had any problems with it. Does not feel like my computer slow down when i'm using Azureus .

nope..you dont have to..these are separate clients which function on its own so u can uninstall the official bittorrent client.

 

i used the actual bittorrent client at the beginning..then bitlord..then azureus...azureus is the best so far

 

bitcomet is probably the most efficient and compatible. some torrent sites ban Azureus because it has security issue.

Utorrent is very good it combines both the features of Azureus and Bitcomet while using minimal ram.

 

Which one of these usually has the least virus/adware/malware and etc.? Or do all of these have similar amount of those things? Also are these clients better than bearshare?
I download much faster in BS than I do in Bitcomet. I have Comcast Cable, but I only download 24 kb/s

 

check out http://www.bittorrent.com/ to download the program. It's very good, and reliable, i've used for a couple of years now, and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Also, to download torrents check out http://www.torrentspy.com/. It's one of the best places to get torrents from. Be careful and cautious of viruses though, when downloading. Limewire is another similar program used to download things and it's really reliable and good. However it is a peer to peer netowrk program. www.limewire.com. Also, who cares if programs such as BitTorrent and Limewire are illegal. At the end of the day, your getting the files you want and I think people should stop whining that they are illegal. Other people put a lot of effort coding and develouping those programs so we can get the files we want.

 

The Limewire thing may not be relavent but still useful!!...

 

I've always heard that limewire comes bundled with tons of spyware and adware, so be sure you get a clean version.

I personally use BitComet just because it's so simple to use.

 

Definitely use azureus because of its features. It does take up a fair ammount of cpu usage and is more strenuous than other clients, yet it has functions for blocking ip's and protecting your own ip. Sure this is only usefull really if your using the client for illigal purposes. I use bittorrent pretty much only for sending edited video (legalally made by me and not copyrighted) to friends for further compiling. Its an amazing program. I might start using utorrent though just because i am annoyed by how hot azureus makes my hd's. The only thing that legal forces need to start shutting down are trackers... like torrentspy.com

 

Many of the "slowness" problems people have with azureus is related to antivirus programs and Java. I had the same problems when i first started using it.
If you set the java executable as an exception in your anti-virus (meaning it doesn't try to constantly scan it), you should have no more slowness problems.

Azureus is great but uTorrent does everything just as well with a much smaller footprint. The new version of uTorrent adds a very clean look to this impressive featureset.

BitComet is Great, and not Java. I use that atm. Plus it has an ANTI-Bittorrent Filter which is helpful if your ISP is blocking torrents from working.

 

I changed my mind. I voted for BitCommet but now I use Utorrent. It's much lighter and very intuitive.

 

Azereus is good for me. Just wish it was faster.

I find all those various functions on Azureus confusing. I like BitTorrent, east to use and simple to change settings to forward ports and things, and I get great download speeds on it. On a decent torrent, I get around 50kb/s on a 512kb ADSL connection.

I love μTorrent. It's the best of the ones I've tried and looks even better with it's latest update.

 

I am amazed that nobody has mentioned Shareaza.

It has one of the nicest and most intuitive GUIs I have ever used. Check it out.

I'm in the uTorrent boat. It is so light on resources, simple and effective UI, filled with features, and it has stats!

 

Now with the new version out I'm back to μTorrent; had to switch to Azureus for a while though because v1.4 was a buggy mess. It's back to being a great program.

 

imho μTorrent gose slowly on the azureus path of being a powerful torrent client. ...with the associated complexity.

 

utorrent is the best. it's only 1 file..no installation needed.
