Check my tweaks and see # 2...I have had tons of phenomenal responses of people cutting their start time by more than 30 seconds in Vista. Myself, my startup is around 20seconds. As this is a native XP program, maybe its just what you are looking for.

From the free ones definitely an IObit SmartDefrag. It has the regular Express method and a Comprehensive one, that also optimizes your hard drive.

Used Auslogics for a file, but all it does is defragment only your files, and not MFT.
    http://www.auslogics.com/faq.php?na...Disk%20Defrag&file=./_products/dd/product.faq

    Question:

    What is MFT?

    Answer:

Probably the most important of the key system (metadata) files that define an NTFS volume, the Master File Table or MFT is the place where information about every file and directory on an NTFS volume is stored. The MFT is in essence a relational database table, containing various attributes about different files. It acts as the "starting point" and central management feature of an NTFS volume--sort of a "table of contents" for the volume, if you will. It is somewhat analog to the file allocation table in a FAT partition, but is much more than just a list of used and available clusters.

Currently we are working on the MFT defragmentation support, so that your MFT can also be defragmented by the program. This feature can be available in one of the future major versions of the program.

Better than O&O, and free? Nothing comes to mind. Diskeeper 2007 Pro is great, but it's not free. DK automatic defrag rocks, plus it has the ability to defrag the MFT as well as expand it if necessary.

Thanks! I'm trying it out and so far I like it. I especially like the autodefrag feature which can be set to defrag the HDD when CPU usage is set below a desired %.

I think I'll use it for a while instead of O&O...

I used to run DK Lite on the drives, it does a very good job. But then my drives started catching fragmentation like fire, i do a lot od adds and deletes everyday. So i upgraded to the paid version which as someone else mentioned here does a neat job. Realtime, on the fly defrag as they say.
