I was reformatting a laptop and my external hard drive was also plugged in at the time. i accidentally deleted the partition on that drive but did not reformat. I need to get some files off of that drive. I tried a program called recover my files but of course, it cannot actually see the drive. the only program i have found that can see the drive is truecrypt. Does anyone know how i can recover my data?

time is not a factor, i can wait as long as needed.

    thx!

You mean it only has unallocated space on it ?
can you see it in disk management ? Try marking it as active, and see if that does any good.

i can't see it in disk management. it may be the usb controller on the external enclosure itself, i will try using the esata cable as it has both.

Can the drive be removed from the enclosure and plugged directly in to the/a computer?

You havent given us a whole lot to go on here--such as the kind of external drive.

The best program I've run into to get you out of this mess is testdisk, but windows needs to see the drive to use the windows version or even the linux version

I'd pry the case apart so you can physically mount the drive so it is seen by your motherboard. But, it is odd that Windows does not see the usb drive in drive management even without a partition, once you plug in the drive.

Drive management should pick it up once it is plugged in, even if it does not assign it a letter.

its not an external by nature, i could easily put it into the case. it is just in an enclosure.

i need to try it on another computer and then put it in, but i am runnnig memtest because the pc is having its own problem ATM.

update: eSATA cable worked, computer can see the drive. i guess it was just the usb controller in the enclosure.

You might also try this stirfriedsushi " Partition Find and Mount 2.31 "

Partition Find and Mount is a powerful and reliable software application thatimplements a new concept of deleted or lost partition recovery. It works in the most convenient way possible - by locating and mounting partitions into the system, thus making those lost partitions available to you like any generic disk volume.
