As the title states, apparently this is an issue that has started a few threads over at Microsoft support forums. I can not take credit for this but seems to fix it.

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [May 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

I got the update does not apply to my system dialog but afterwards windows update worked fine, YMMV.

Edit; This may just be a dns issue with Microsoft.............

I had the same issue with 7, I stopped then restarted the update service to no avail. Then I rebooted and all was fine at approx. 7 PM EST in S/E PA, using google DNS only.
Good find Tanware, will bookmark that for the next update debacle!

Yeah it is a temp fix. I know without the fix it seemed to still get MSE definitions on its won but it would not allow a manual scan, at least with my system. as mentioned it seems mileage varies as some had harder issues than others. I know I never changed the DNS just the update that said it was not needed fixed my system.

My take on the problem with the updating, had to do with the TWC server backbone going screwy, and not resolving the TWC DNS to the MS site. That's why I temporarily changed my IP4 to the Google DNS, successfully ran the update, then changed back to my TWC auto selected DNS entries. After the TWC problem was fixed, it took a few days to filter down to all the sub-servers, and now I don't have any issue doing the auto update.

I really don't think that MS had any "update", to fix TWC's backbone problem. If you are talking about KB2993651, IIRC that was released a few hours before the update problem surfaced. The only updates I've had since KB2993651, were the daily MSE KB2310138 Security updates.

    I could be wrong. :nah:

Yeah, I was receiving updates automatically, for whatever reason, and they were the definition updates. The error only appeared if I would go in and check manually for updates. it works now so all is good.

You're not the only one who hasn't experienced it, but if it's a DNS issue, it could very well be localized to some ISPs.
