    me to get all my data off an old XP laptop? it is just when i put the internal laptop into another system it won't boot obviously because the motherboard/hardware info is different.

    should do. Just take the hard drive out and connect it via usb to any current working computer.

    Or you can use an IDE/PATA to USB enclosure with the cover off (if this is your old 12.7mm thick HDD).

    why does it not work when i take an internal 2.5" out of one system and install it internally into another, but this does?

    This works because it is acting as external storage. The operating system is running off the internal hard disk.

    When you install the HDD into a notebook then it will try to boot from it and, if the operating system installation is not set up for the hardware, then it will crash. Usually it falls over when it gets to the chipset / HDD interface driver. If it loads that and it is the wrong one then it can't read the HDD any more during th OS boot. :eek: Safe mode avoids loading many drivers. did you try that (press F8 as Windows starts to load).
