You don't "have to turn off" Windows Defender.. I let it run and its just running quietly.. once in a while I do a scan of the system with it. And its been pretty good till now. No annoying behavior.

And check the forum threads there for more..

Quickly, SuperAntiSpyware and MalwaysBytes AntiMalware are good ones...

I don't know if ThreatFire would be what you're looking for, but its has some pretty good real-time protection, particularly for rootkits n such..

    Browse above for more.

PS., For MODS, I think this thread would be better to be in the Security Forum. Thank You.

Yeah I agree with fonduekid, but if things start acting strange and it becomes unusably slow then disable it.

You can keep using WDefender and, for instance, ThreatFire at the same time.
It's a real-time antimalware behavioural blocker, not a real HIPS, 32-bit only though and sometimes you will need to temporarily diable it to install certain programs (like FireFox NoScipt add-on f.i.)
    +1 for SAS and MBAM.

Check out WinPatrol or Security Task Manager.
You could also give the Online Armor firewall a try.
It's not exactly what you asked for but it's an excellent product with a HIPS called Program Guard.
That way you have about best control over what programs (want to) start, and you can control fully what's allowed to run/start/connect to internet/etc.
Those programs are all free. Some DL-links are in my signature.
    Cheers

^Nope, never used it, the first time I've seen it to be honest so I can't comment.
It received a lot of positive reviews though, looking at all the awards on the website.
I'd say it's safe to use, especially since all changes made can easily be reverted.
    Cheers.
