Have you tried running dxdiag and running the tests.

    What exactly is the "error"

    Does the file exist

If so, go the start menu, type the following in the search box

    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\d3d8thk.dll
    < enter >

    k. like i said before its my girlfriends laptop. the d3d8thk.dll does exist. ive seen it the system32 folder. i believe the error says that d3d8thk.dll is not a valid windows image. ill have her try the regsvr32 next time i talk to her

That almost certainly means the file is damaged/corrupted. What you need to do is get another copy (download or from another machine) and replace the one that is there--it may not be easy to replace with windows running.

Reinstalling DirectX didn't work because the installer saw the file and did not overwrite it, so you might try rebooting into safe mode and then renaming the existing one d3d8thk.bak and then installing directx again

    Probably the easiest way

alright so you think changing the name of d3d8thk.dll to .bak and then trying to reinstall directx will work? Has anyone tried this before?
