To avoid using my NB speakers, i bought a nice pair of Sony V6 headphones. They sound great... off my home stereo system but are really really bad when powered by the NB headphone output. I have an MSI 270 which lists:

    sound, video and game controllers
    ...audio codecs
    ...legacy audio drivers
    ...legacy video capture devices
    ...media control devices
    ...realtek AC'97 Audio
    ...Video Codecs

in Device manager. I don't know what the actual onboard sound processor is.

I use WINAMP. I don't know what I can do but I would prefer a free/cheap software solution rather than getting a hardware audio card. Would I be able to fix this with better drivers, codecs, or some software like SRS WOW or something?

Really bad how? Crackly? You may just have a low-quality sound card (AC'97 isn't top of the line) and your only recourse would be a USB sound device.

It sounds mufled, echo-y and hallow, like it was set to an preset or something like underwater church hall....

I have a program always running called AC97 Audio configuration. It has a bunch of presets just like that but make it sound even worse...

I was just wondering if there are any sites that offer third party performance drivers for audio, like there are for video cards...
