WinMPG might work. I haven't used it, but it looks like it is worth a shot.

    .MP4?

this for the PSP? or just regular conversion?

If for PSP, I use PSPVideo9 for avi -> mp4 for watching on my psp.

If not, can't help you there :(

I've used that for, of all things, an iPod. VLC Media player also works for trans-coding.

VLC Media Player is an open source project. Start here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. It can do a lot of things with a lot of different formats. One of the best features is it isn't codec driven, it uses local dll's instead of making system wide changes.

tried videora today and it seemed fine for the most part. managed to convert a couple movies and import them to my ipod. but i noticed that for some the image size is kinda distorted (like too wide or too narrow) and that the sound is delayed or too fast.

for the ipod you need to make sure the size you want is 320x240...I would use Nero 6.8 - 7.0 to convert if not for the ipods and use the recommend software for that thing....Ipod = monoply of crap for me. Its only good if someone gave it to me =P

i dont know what the recommended software is for the ipod. the only i know of is quicktime pro and i dont want to pay pay for that. need something that is free.

yeah the size is 320x240 but it looks distorted still. but im more worried about the sound problem being too fast.

Use Videora. Donate to its developer. You don't have to donate, but he is providing a good product that doesn't support that Apple Bloat. I've used it for MPEG2 encoded TV shows to iPod Vid and it works. VLC can also be used to make .MP4 files, but is a bit more complicated.
