I'm trying to watch videos from my notebook on my hdtv, which are connected via an hdmi cable.
in my vista power settings, I set the action to happen when I close my notebook to none, yet everytime I close it the hdmi signal is gone. means I can't play a video while having my notebook closed, sucks totally.
I also noticed that when I have hdmi unplugged, it makes the sound of usb plug/unplug when I open/close the cover.

does anyone know why that happens? and what I could do to prevent it (ie really make the laptop do nothing when closing the cover)

Similar problem here. Turned out to be the graphic card driver's fault. Check your GPU drivers settings see if you have "power options" or something and if not - try a different driver.

That's why I go VGA to VGA, and an audio cable. However the audio cable causes a AC power hum noise if your AC power is plugged in...which I hate. So I have to unplug the AC power then all is good.
Does your laptop have a hdmi slot? Or are you using a VGA to HDMI

thanks, my drivers dont have any power options at all, sony has released a new version which I am downloading atm ... at 8 kb/s tho :(
If that doesnt help, I will try the latest laptopvideo2go.com driver.

I'm using a HDMI to HDMI connection, I dont want to use the VGA exit due to its inferior quality.
btw, you can get rid of that AC hum, there are silencers available. I have the Behringer MicroHD 400, removes all AC noises reliably.

laptopvideo2go.com's drivers are quite OK. Though, you have to do a lot of trial and error to know which driver is the best for you.

Sometime, also in my case, an official NVIDIA desktop driver + laptopvideo2go.com's nv4_disp.inf works best.

Sony tend to stop update VAIO drivers after a while... sooner or later, you will need to go to laptopvideo2go.com.

Man, I can relate. For over a year I had that problem with my old computer and had to take special precautions all the time to keep my lid from closing while running dual screen. Even my new laptop was doing the same thin except one day the lid closed accidentally while I was watching a video and nothing happened... The lid hasn't caused a system crash since then and I am happy as hell. The worst part is, I have no idea what fixed it... maybe a vista update. Try updating your OS before anything

I should point out that I have only run vga t0 vga so I might have the same problem with hdmi also...

the new nvidia driver from sony doesn't change anything, I have to try the laptopvideo2go drivers now.

btw, I have also not received a response from vaio link yet.

If you close it and lose the HDMI signal, does anything get logged to the event logs?

Yup; it's too bad it isn't in a more prominent position (don't know how that'd work, just that it took me a long time to actually run across it) - it's a wealth of information (although sometimes it can be very obtuse or cryptic). For the more advanced users (not me, yet :D), the logs can also be customized to focus on pinpointing a particular problem.
