How old is the Laptop - does it meet XP hardware specifications ?

Are you installing from a cd ? If so make sure in the BIOS the CD is the first bootable device. Also the cd has to be bootable of course.

Is there a disk in the floppy drive? If so take it out. There are cases this type of error can occur if you have a card reader and a memory card in there so if this is case take all the cards out.

    Umm Bugger

    1. Try copying the XP cd (in it's entirety) to the Hard Drive and I install from there while the Floppy Drive is put back in.

    2. See if there is a BIOS setting that will disable the Floppy drive

    3. Check the Dell Web site and Forms to see if this is a known issue - may be information there.

    Good Luck...........dy

your disk might be corrupted. Try calling dell and see if you can get a new disk.

I only suggest that because I had it happen on my old toshiba. The disks got corrupted, but when i got the new disks, everything worked great.

I also had the same thing happen when trying to install on my old Satellite, except it wouldn't even get that far, if the cd has a deep scratch on it that file might be corrupted. I would suggest finding another computer and trying to copy all of the files to a temp folder and see if all of the files could be copied successfully, if not, your cd is probably shot, and you'll need to get a new one.
